From Kindergarten to graduation, Buckley students are immersed in physical activities that bring the age old adage of “sound mind, sound body” to life.

What Dr. Buckley understood intuitively nearly 75 years ago has since been proven in study after study – that physical activity improves self-esteem, academic performance, the ability to concentrate and the ability to cooperate with peers.

Physical Education programs lay the foundation for life-long health and fitness both in the classroom and on the playing field. Students are given the instruction and guidance they need to make the positive personal choices to lead healthy lives.

Physical activity is a crucial balance to the academic efforts of students. Exercise stimulates the student and assures the advancement of the entire program. ‘A sound body’ becomes an actuality, and with it, a great sense of accomplishment.”

Dr. Isabelle Buckley, Founder

Sports are approached based on the premise that their true benefits have little to do with winning and losing. Discipline, self-direction, self-esteem, leadership, fundamental skill development, and the enjoyment of participation are the overall objectives.

This is exemplified by Buckley’s “Everyone Can” philosophy for Middle School sports. We field competitive teams, yet our no-cut policy encourages all students to discover their physical “self” and develop their skills in a non-intimidating way.

The goal of our Upper School athletics program is to field teams that are continually at the top of their league. Fair and equal competition, sportsmanship and fair play are the guiding principals of our program. To obtain these objectives, students must be willing to devote the time and effort necessary to become a valued member of the team.
